Abstract

"The Select Committee of the House of Lords, appointed two years since to inquire into the Sweating System, has at last brought its labours to a close. The inquiry has been exhaustive. Under the chairmanship of Lord Dunraven, it has been extended from the East End of London, to which it was originally restricted, to the principal provincial towns; it has embraced, besides the great clothing industries, the nail and chain, cutlery, gunlocks, saddlery and furniture trades — in fact, the manufacture of almost every article of personal use turned out in wholesale quantities." - p. 885.
