Abstract

"I wonder how soon the respectable 'rank-and-file' M.P. who rolls out his [...?] platitude about the futility of seeking to 'divide up' everybody's wealth, and at the same time scoffs at the State becoming the universal employer, will begin dimly to supsect that he is thereby writing himself down as an ass. This year the 9,000,000 families of the United Kingdom will, by the combined exertions of such of them as contribute anything to production, produce commodities and services to the value (as sold in the market) of eighteen hundred million pounds sterling. This is what the 9,000,000 families will have to live on for the year; and it is interesting to see that it works out at an average of £200 per family. But it will not be allowed to 'work out' so." - introductory paragraphs.
