In reviewing John Hobson's book The Evolution of Modern Capitalism (it was translated into Russian a year earlier), Lenin advised readers not to neglect the study of certain specific features of English history and English life, such as "the high development of democracy, the absence of militarism, the enormous strength of organized trade Unions, the growing housing of English capital outside of England, weakening the antagonism between British employers and workers, etc." (VI Lenin. Full. collect. op., Vol. 4, p. 155). Here, with great precision, Lenin points out simultaneously the strengths and weaknesses of the British workers' movement. He had just received a brilliant opportunity to study them: in the first half of 1898, Lenin translated I volume of the book Sydney and Beatrice Webb "Industrial Democracy" (in Russia it was published under the title "Theory and Practice of English Trade Unionism"). Then in May 1899, Lenin received for editing the manuscript of the translation of Volume II. In a letter to [his] sister Anna Ilinichna (July 15, 1898), Lenin said of the book: "... the book is very, very useful" (VI Lenin. Full. collect. op., v. 55, p. 94) - a remark which, however, should not be regarded as absolutely laudatory. After reading the English text of Volume II he wrote to his mother (September 1, 1899) that together with Nadezhda Konstantinovna began to read Bernstein's book (the notorious "Preconditions of Socialism and the Problems of Social Democracy"). "Theoretically - incredibly weak; repetition of other people's thoughts ... Virtually - opportunism (Fabianism, or rather: the original mass of assertions and ideas of Bernstein is in the Webb's in their last books), limitless opportunism and posililism [sic - posibilizm?], and yet a cowardly opportunism ..." (VI Lenin. Full. collect. op. v. 44, p. 176) -- Auto-translated extract from V.I. Lenin and the Socialist Movement in Great Britain - II. The first works on Great Britain / E. Rotshtein.
